Preconception and fertility: Frequently asked questions
The preconception period is a time when you need extra support and have lots of questions. Here are my answers to some common questions. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you don’t see your questions answered here!
Do you support both parents preconception, or just the mom?
Whenever possible, I prefer to have both parents involved in the preconception preparation and fertility optimization journey. This applies to same-sex couples as well as heterosexual couples. If you’re a single mother by choice, that’s perfectly fine too!
What role will my spouse/partner have in the process?
If your spouse or partner will be your child’s biological father, nutritional and lifestyle changes to enhance fertility apply to him too. Everything that boosts fertility in women also boosts it in men. If you’re planning to work with donor sperm, your spouse or partner still has a vital supportive role. His or her participation in the program will greatly benefit both your relationship and your family. In fact, the deeply nourishing nutritional tips are a great starting point for enhancing most people’s health.
Additionally, involving your partner or spouse in the food preparation process now will allow her or him to prepare nourishing food for you in late pregnancy and after birth. That being said, it’s important for the two of you to agree on what changes to implement, at what pace and with what frequency.
How strict are the nutritional and lifestyle changes you recommend to couples working on their fertility? Will we have to eliminate all our favorite foods and go to bed by 9 p.m.?
You don’t have to be strict at all. Generally speaking, there are only four things you must avoid at all costs: fear, guilt, worry and shame. Everything else is negotiable! The first thing to keep in mind is that any improvement in nutrition and lifestyle, no matter how small, will benefit you. Avoid setting the bar too high, and aim to be flexible, especially on social occasions. Some people find it useful to set a percentage number they use as a goal for compliance. If your compliance goal is 75%, that means you give yourself permission to “break the rules” one day out of four. If your compliance goal is 90%, then you give yourself permission to break the rules one day out of ten. The best way to choose your compliance goal is to be very realistic and a little ambitious!
I/we have been trying to conceive for a long time. Can you help us?
Fertility is definitely an area where nutrition and lifestyle changes can be helpful. Of course, I cannot guarantee results, although I’m happy to say that my clients have a phenomenal success rate. My job is to help you investigate and address root causes that may be negatively impacting your body’s ability to conceive. These may include nutritional deficiencies, difficulties in the assimilation of nutrients, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune issues such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, excess stress, toxic exposures and undiagnosed food intolerances.
I/we are working with a sperm donor, egg donor or a surrogate. How does this change the preconception process?
If you are working with a known sperm or egg donor or with a surrogate, it’s great to get him or her on board if at all possible to optimize the baby’s health from the get-go. If you can’t get the third party on board, trust that the work you do on yourself will help immensely.
Is nutritional therapy compatible with fertility treatments?
Yes, if you are preparing for and IUI or an IVF or taking fertility-enancing medications, preconception nutritional therapy can help the procedure be more efficacious and thus cost-effective. It can also help reduce the side effects of hormonal treatments. I do need to know about any medications and treatments so as to best support you through the process.
Is nutritional therapy effective?
In my experience, nutritional therapy is extremely effective. In fact, so far everyone who has completed my Feed Your Fertile Body!™ program to date has conceived. I love receiving family pictures with pregnant mamas and, later, their sweet babies! You can read testimonials from some of the past program participants here.
